Lawmakers tackle issue of sobriety checkpoints Austin Texas News Texas Cable News TXCN.com News for Texas: "Big changes could be on the way for drivers in Texas. Lawmakers spent Monday evening at the State Capitol, debating the issue of sobriety checkpoints.
According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a group that supports sobriety checkpoints, more than 1,200 Texans were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2005.
Critics, however, believe those checkpoints could cost Texans their civil rights. "

The City of Arlington is already doing this, but they call them DL & Insurance Check Points. Of course once you are stopped, they will enforce Safety Sticker, DUI, etc. laws if they see fit.
I have questioned city and law enforcement officials it they will detain illegal aliens if detected in these stops, and they said that they "do not enforce Federal Law". I pointed out they do enforce Federal law every day, but only for offenses that they are comfortable with.
To me it is not constitutional, since they are not enforcing all laws uniformly and fairly to all citizens.
If they want to pick and choose which laws to enforce, they should not use road blocks to do this.
Also, I could not get any one at the City of Arlington to tell me the locations of these road blocks for the past 12 months; they are not sure who, if anyone would have this information.
I suspect that these are not done near Ranger Ball Park, or the finer neighborhoods, and they certainly will not be setup around the new Cowboys stadium!
The city accomplishes two things by setting up these traps. Ticket Revenue, and the appeasement of MADD.
