Bill would target drunken drivers who kill officers
Star-Telegram.com 03/06/2007 Bill would target drunken drivers who kill officers: "Because police officers and firefighters voluntarily put themselves in harm’s way, drunken drivers who kill or injure them while they’re on the job should face longer prison sentences, the widows of two Tarrant County officers killed by intoxicated motorists told a legislative panel Tuesday."

I testified in support of this Bill and believe it is an important law that deserves our communities support. While the rest of us have the option of not being out during the peak drunk driving hours the police officers and firefighters and EMT's do not.
While each of us has the option of not pulling over to help a stranded individual and thereby put ourselves at risk the police officers and EMT's and Firefighters do not. We have lost 6 police officers to drunk drivers in the last 15 years in Tarrant County and I have prosecuted the last five. In each case the officers were killed beucase they were out helping citizens and were hit by a drunk driver. The law already gives police officer's special protection in every other offense, ie Assault, Agg Aslt, Murder and also add;s enhancement when Fire Fighters are injured putting out a fire. This bill is just a logical and much needed extension to those laws.
