An email I received about libraries

"Jay, you are delusional on this issue. I think that it should be entirely reasonable to expect some places to still be 'kid friendly.' I should be able to walk out of the room while my child is watching broadcast TV and not have to worry about what comes on next at 7pm. We are quickly losing that! The library should be the same. I, for one was very surprised by this story. There are thousands of children who do have access to a library without their parents having to take them there, including one of mine who walks by one everyday on her way from school. Most parents would encourage them to stop by and take advantage of the resources, (Which, I personally would be happy if they stuck to books) and not have to tell them to wait until I can be there with them!
Jay is also nuts to believe that a book would be more harmful to a child, particularly a young one, then a movie! Most young kids will have little or no desire to check out a r-rated book, but will be quite curious about an r-rated movie. We have laws and city ordinances to govern how people act in public and what they can show, why should a public library be different?
It is not difficult to in act procedures to keep children from checking out r-rated movies (which do not have to be watched to find out if they are r-rated by the way.) And who would be against that?
Jay... I thought that this was a common sense show!?"

*You can expect whatever you want. Whether you're entitled to it or whether it is right to expect it is another thing. If you don't trust your kids at the library don't just drop them off there. This is pretty simple stuff in my opinion. - Jay
