My son and daughter were encouraged to go to college from the time the were in elementary. They also knew that they would have to pay for it from that time. We told them if they went to college here that they could live at home and it would be a lot less expensive.
Our daughter wanted to be a missionary so she chose a very a Bible college in Pensacola, Florida (Pensacola Christian College). Her tuition, room, board and misc. expenses came to $6000 a year. She worked 12 hours a week during the school year and then all summer and she graduated with a high quality education and debt free!
Our son wanted to go into theatre. He went community college for 2 years and then decided he wanted to go to UCLA. He moved to Santa Monica and worked a year to establish residency (to avoid the high out of state charges). They he went to Santa Monica Community College for a year and transfered into UCLA for 2 years. He graduated from UCLA and he only has $10,000 in debt, which I think is pretty good considering that it costs approx. $20,000 a year! The stories he tells of students of kids blowing mom and dad's money partying.
As he said, "Because I am paying for it I can't afford to flunk - because I will just have to pay for it again."
